This diet comes from the USA and promises effective weight loss in just one week. According to the associated website, the crash diet is particularly suitable for people who want to lose weight quickly - for example, because a wedding or a vacation is imminent.

What exactly the military diet has to do with the military is unclear, although the diet plan is reminiscent of the military's strict guidelines. However, we cannot imagine soldiers eating a scoop of vanilla ice cream every evening.

The 3-day diet plan is low in calories at around 1,000 kilocalories per day, high in protein, and quite whimsical in its composition. To obtain the appropriate results, it should be followed exactly. Here is an overview of the menu for each day:

Tag 1:

  • Breakfast: ½ grapefruit, 1 slice of toast, 2 tablespoons peanut butter, 1 cup of coffee or tea (with caffeine)
  • Lunch: ½ cup of tuna, 1 slice of toast, 1 cup of coffee or tea (with caffeine)
  • Dinner: 85g meat, 1 cup green beans, ½ banana, 1 small apple, 1 cup vanilla ice cream

Tag 2:

  • Breakfast: 1 egg, 1 slice of toast, 1 banana
  • Lunch: 1 cup cottage cheese, 1 hard-boiled egg, and 5 crackers for lunch
  • Dinner: 2 sausages, 1 cup broccoli, ½ carrot, ½ banana, 1 cup vanilla ice cream

Tag 3:

  • Breakfast: 5 crackers, 1 slice of cheese, 1 small apple
  • Lunch: 1 hard-boiled egg, 1 slice of toast
  • Dinner: 1 cup tuna, ½ banana, 1 cup vanilla ice cream for dinner

In addition to the diet plan, sufficient water should be drunk.

The 3 days are followed by 4 days that are still calorie-restricted at 1,500 calories per day and for which specific targets apply. A total of up to 5 kilos should then tumble in one week. If the diet is carried out for a month, according to the inventors - although the website does not make it clear who that is - there should even be a loss of up to 13 kilos.

Beware of the yo-yo effect

Since the military diet's diet plan is quite strict and calorie-restricted, it will likely be quite effective. Whether it is the 5 kilograms in a week then depends on the current weight. However, it may well be that you regain the kilos fairly quickly after the diet phase. Crash diets, such as the military diet, lead to the yo-yo effect in most cases and can also slow down the metabolism.

The military diet is also not exactly balanced and healthy. While it includes some natural foods like vegetables, fruit, and meat, it also includes processed foods like toast, ice cream, and sausages. It is therefore not suitable as an introduction to a long-term healthy diet.

Bottom Line on the Diet: Find a healthier weight loss plan

The military diet is a strict crash diet that is very likely to result in quick weight loss success but not necessarily in the long term. At the same time, it can mess up digestion and metabolism and thus lead to symptoms.

Is the military diet good for losing weight?

 Due to the reduced amount of calories, the military diet can lead to short-term weight loss, similar to juice fasting. However, nutrition experts are skeptical about long-term success. As with all crash diets - which include the Hollywood Diet and the Golo Diet - there is a risk of the yo-yo effect. And: Whether in the mixed diet or vegetarian variant, the military diet is ultimately very one-sided and difficult to follow due to the strict requirements. If you want to get slim and, above all, stay slim, you should pay attention to a balanced diet and exercise a lot. A filling athlete's breakfast, for example, prevents cravings and provides valuable nutrients that make the body and mind efficient.

Lose up to 5 kg in 3 days  

That's what this diet promises. Due to the strong calorie deficit, which is created in the first 3 days of the military diet, a high loss of up to 5 kg should be possible in this short time. In addition, the combination of different foods, eg coffee, and grapefruit in the morning, should stimulate the metabolism in addition to weight loss. However, this often postulated effect of individual food combinations on weight loss has never been proven. 

The calorie reduction in the military diet is very drastic, 1000 calories a day is extremely low. In comparison: a woman has an average normal requirement of approx. 2000 calories per day, a man 2500 - 3000 calories (depending on age, activity level, etc., of course). So it's no wonder that with this strict crash diet, the pounds start to tumble. Sounds great, doesn't it? 

Unfortunately, there is a big catch with the military diet: the scales will certainly show significantly less, but you are less likely to lose unwanted fat mass.

What do experts say about the Military Diet?

The diet advisors of the stars are enthusiastic: You hardly lose weight as quickly as with this diet. Khloe Kardashian is said to have followed the same diet. Nevertheless: The Military Diet can at best be seen as an introduction to a change in diet. Otherwise, the unpleasant yo-yo effect will set in after stopping the diet. Since the body has been put into such bad times, it then ensures that calories are quickly stashed away again with a normal diet.
